- Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in Portugal's 2018 World Cup opener against Spain

- The two world football giants drew 3-3 with Diego Costa bagging a brace

- Nacho was also on target for Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo's stunning hat-trick against 2010 World Cup champions, Spain, earned Portugal a crucial point in the two team's 2018 World Cup

The European rivals, both with plenty of familiar players and similar styles, went into the clash in what was arguably the most highly-anticipated groups stage matches of the tournament.

Fortunately, the mouth-watering tie did not disappoint as both teams produced an epic performance that eventually saw them share the spoils in a in six-goal thriller.

However, Portugal's lead was short-lived, with Diego Costa equalising for Spain in the 24th minute, dragging a low shot past Patricio from 12 yards.

Ronaldo handed Portugal the lead once again a minute to half-time, wangling a hard low shot at De Gea to make it 2-1.Costa once again stepped up for Spain upon the resumption of the second-half, stabbing the ball in from six yards.
Nacho, for the very first time gifted Spain a lead that felt like a liberation, but with just one minute to stoppage time, Ronaldo curled in a wonderful free kick to complete a hat-trick and give Portugal a deserved one point.

The encounter pitting the two world football champions was Group B's second after an earlier one that saw Morocco suffer an injury-time heartbreak against Iran.
